The South Korean music world was shaken by the passing of singer Wheesung (43, real name Choi Wheesung), who was found dead at his home on March 10.
According to police and fire department reports, Wheesung was discovered collapsed in an apartment in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, around 6:29 PM. His family quickly contacted the authorities, but the singer had already passed away before help arrived.
The cause of death is still under investigation, and police have not ruled out the possibility of an overdose or suicide.
“There were no signs of a break-in or criminal activity. We’re investigating whether there was a will and the exact situation leading up to the incident,” said the authorities.
This tragic news stunned fans as Wheesung was scheduled to hold a concert with KCM at the Daegu EXCO Auditorium on March 15. Just four days before his death, Wheesung had uploaded a post on social media with the caption:
“See you on March 15 after this diet ends.”
Wheesung kicked off his music career in 2002 with the album ‘Like a Movie,’ and shot to fame with hit songs like ‘Can’t I?’, ‘With Me’, ‘The Day We Met Again,’ and ‘One Year.’ Besides being a talented singer, Wheesung was also a prolific lyricist, creating popular tracks for Younha, Lee Hyori, T-ara, Orange Caramel, TWICE, Ivy, and Ailee.
In 2017, Wheesung founded his own recording label, Real Slow Company. However, his life took a hit after his personal manager passed away suddenly, leaving him in deep emotional distress.
In recent years, Wheesung faced drug abuse controversies. In 2021, he was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of probation for possessing and illegally using propofol. He was also once found unconscious due to an etomidate injection, an anesthetic substance now classified as an illegal drug.
Authorities are still continuing their investigation to determine the true cause of Wheesung’s death. – BOOM!
