Mimi Fly’s festive Raya song Serumpun has taken the internet by storm since its YouTube debut last Saturday. But it’s her bold appearance in the music video that seemingly wrapped in a towel-like outfit grabbed the most headlines.
Many netizens found the attire disrespectful for a song celebrating Hari Raya. In an interview with MStar, Mimi, whose full name is Shamimi Amalina Norhisham, 38, said she’s open to the criticism.
“I welcome all feedback, and if anyone’s offended by my work, I sincerely apologize. God willing, if I make another Raya song, I’ll do better,” she told MStar.
Mimi stressed she never meant to stir controversy, admitting her obsession with her work might have blinded her to other considerations.
“It wasn’t my intention. Right now, I’m so caught up in my own creation. Maybe I got too focused on the art and pushed other things aside,” she explained.
Mimi added that her outfit was a collaboration with renowned fashion designer Abu Shaef Hamza, who’s well-versed in the history of traditional clothing.
“I just thought the outfit I wore was beautiful and comfy. I’ve long admired the styles of the past, so I loved it.
“I didn’t do this alone—I worked with an amazing designer, Abu Shaef Hamza. He’s a pro, and together we explored the history of old-school attire,” she elaborated.
Despite the mixed reactions, Mimi remains grateful that her work is getting noticed.
“I’ve been out of the spotlight for a while, so coming back, I’m rediscovering my roots—my mixed Minang, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai heritage,” she shared.
Mimi wrapped up by expressing satisfaction that Serumpun has sparked all kinds of opinions from listeners. – BOOM!
