Will Smith has finally won a copyright lawsuit filed by science fiction author, Ken Sibanda, claiming $1.7 million. Ken argued that the film Gemini Man, starring Will, was a copy of his novel The Return to Gibraltar.
However, on January 31, a federal judge ruled to dismiss the lawsuit, rejecting Ken’s claim that the film copied the theme, plot, and characters from his book.
Ken argued that Gemini Man tells the story of a man who is cloned for time travel without consent, similar to his novel. Ken also claimed that he had submitted a copy of his book to Hollywood talent agencies before the book was published.
However, Will and his production company responded by stating that Ken had previously filed a similar claim, which was dismissed due to his failure to register the copyright before taking legal action.
Gemini Man, with a budget of $138 million (excluding marketing costs), earned $173 million worldwide. With this ruling, Will Smith is now free from the lawsuit and can breathe a sigh of relief. – BOOM!
