After 20 years away from the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) stage, iconic pop diva Mariah Carey made a stunning return as she received the Video Vanguard Award, presented by pop star Ariana Grande.
The award was given shortly after Carey, 56, won her first-ever VMA in the Best R&B category for the music video Type Dangerous.
“Thank you so much to MTV for giving me the Vanguard Award. I can’t believe I’m getting my first VMA tonight,” she said.
Carey also reminisced about past memories, including performing with Whitney Houston and presenting the same award to LL Cool J in 1997.
“Music videos are my way of life, of bringing music to my own life, sometimes there’s just an excuse to bring the drama and do things I wouldn’t do in real life,” she added.
Returning to the VMAs after two decades, Carey closed her speech with gratitude to her fans.
“After all this time, I’ve learned that music evolves, videos evolve, but the fun, that is eternal to my fans, the Lambily, I love you so much.”
The meaningful night was further elevated with a medley performance of her hit songs, including Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, Obsessed, It’s Like That, and We Belong Together.
