Indonesia’s latest animated film, Merah Putih, has faced heavy criticism from netizens following the release of its official trailer recently.
Many felt that the production quality did not match the large budget of 6.7 billion rupiah (RM1.7 million) allocated for it.
Netizens questioned the final output, which they deemed “unsatisfactory,” and compared it to popular Malaysian animations like Boboiboy and Upin & Ipin.
Both of these animated series were praised for their solid visual quality despite reportedly using smaller budgets.
“As an Indonesian, Upin & Ipin is truly the best,” wrote one social media user.
Although Merah Putih was expected to be a source of national pride, audience reactions show they want higher-quality local works.

Many hope Indonesia’s animation industry will continue to grow and compete on the international stage.
The animated film is scheduled to hit cinemas across Indonesia on August 14. – BOOM!
