The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the film industry is becoming more widespread, and now, filmmakers who want to compete at the Oscars must disclose if they use this technology in their works.
According to a report by Variety, the Academy currently provides an optional AI disclosure form, but they are considering making it mandatory for the 2026 Oscars. The new rules are expected to be announced in April.
This decision comes after controversies surrounding two Oscar-nominated films, The Brutalist and Emilia Perez, which were criticized for their use of AI.
The Brutalist faced backlash after reports claimed AI was used in post-production. Its director, Brady Corbet, denied excessive AI usage and clarified, “Our actors trained with a Hungarian dialect coach, and the building sketches in this film were done manually.”
Meanwhile, Emilia Perez used AI to clone the actors’ voices, which also sparked debate. Other films like A Complete Unknown and Dune: Part 2 were also reported to have used AI in some aspects.
With this new rule, there will be no more secrets about AI usage at the Oscars. – BOOM!
