Famous director, Michael Ang, has loudly expressed his dissatisfaction with claims by an individual who stated that eating Yee Sang is haram (forbidden) for Muslims.
In a post on Instagram, Michael described the claim as baseless and called the individual ‘stupid,’ explaining that Yee Sang is not a religious ritual food but a tradition of the Chinese community during Chinese New Year.
“Who even said eating Yee Sang is haram? Yee Sang isn’t some traditional food from the era of Chinese Emperors or anything. Stop trying to stir up trouble and spread misleading teachings,” he said angrily.
He added that he posted this after his 13-year-old nephew stopped him from eating Yee Sang, influenced by a claim made by a ‘ustaz’ (religious teacher) on TikTok.

“Earlier, during dinner, I was eating Yee Sang when suddenly my nephew warned me, saying he saw on TikTok that an Ustaz claimed it’s haram for Muslims to eat. He told me not to eat it!”
The post sparked a heated debate among netizens. Some supported Michael’s view that Yee Sang is just a cultural practice and has no connection to religious beliefs, while others argued that it’s better to be cautious when it comes to food rulings.
