Malaysia has made history as the iconic Merdeka 118, the nation’s tallest landmark and the second tallest in the world, graces the silver screen in Marvel Studios’ latest film, Thunderbolts*, which began its theatrical run on May 1, 2025.
Filmed in August 2024, the thrilling scene features actress Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova — leaping from the top of the 678.9-meter-tall building, set against the breathtaking panorama of Kuala Lumpur.
“This action sequence is truly extraordinary and the result of a fantastic team effort. We collaborated with a Malaysian engineering firm to ensure safety, particularly in designing the parachuting equipment,” shared Thunderbolts director Jake Scheier.
The selection of Merdeka 118 not only showcases Malaysia’s architectural beauty to the world, but the scene also highlights local faces, including Malaysian actress Syaza Atheera, through Marvel’s production collaboration with local crew and talent.
The film has sparked immense pride among Malaysians as the nation’s iconic building takes center stage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. – BOOM!
