Renowned producer, Datuk Yusof Haslam has urged the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) to be more cautious in providing grants to film producers. According to him, some producers receive grants of RM500,000 but only spend RM200,000 to produce a film, which he finds very disappointing.

“The quality of their films is like telefilms, and in fact, some telefilms are even better. This is the act of irresponsible producers. FINAS must be more careful because this involves public funds,” Yusof stressed.

He suggested that FINAS should select new producers who are truly responsible and have a good track record.

“Let them make telefilms first. If they prove to be good, then give them the opportunity to produce films. Don’t just hand it over to individuals who have just entered the industry and are not serious producers. The selection must be logical,” he said.

Yusof also shared his approach in training his son, Syamsul Yusof, before giving him the opportunity to direct films.

“I let Syamsul direct dramas like Gerak Khas. When he did well, and his telefilms turned out great, only then did I trust him to make films. I was careful because this involves money,” he added.

When asked about the issue of film production being completed in a short time, Yusof considered it a subjective matter.

“Some films are made quickly but still have great quality, like Babah and Imaginur. The budget may be small, but the quality is excellent. On the other hand, some films take months to shoot, but the results are terrible,” he explained.

This statement by Yusof is seen as an effort to ensure that Malaysia’s film industry continues to produce high-quality works while using funds responsibly. – BOOM!
