Los Angeles is currently facing a major disaster as wildfires have devastated vast areas, claiming lives and destroying properties. Governor Gavin Newsom and President Joe Biden have declared a state of emergency to address the situation.
The largest fire, the Palisades Fire, began on Tuesday due to strong winds hitting the Pacific Palisades area, an elite community home to many celebrities. On Wednesday night, another major fire, the Sunset Fire, broke out in Runyon Canyon, threatening iconic Hollywood landmarks such as the Hollywood Bowl and the Walk of Fame.
Celebrities Affected by the Fires
Actor James Woods, known for Once Upon a Time in America, was affected when his home was completely destroyed. In a CNN interview, Woods tearfully said, “One day you’re swimming in the pool, the next day everything is gone.”
Paris Hilton shared on Instagram, “Watching our home in Malibu burn on live TV is something indescribable.”
Jamie Lee Curtis also posted pictures of her devastated neighborhood. “Our house is safe, but many have lost everything. Thank you to the firefighters,” she wrote.
Cary Elwes lost his home in the Palisades Fire but expressed gratitude that his family was safe. Meanwhile, Star Wars actor Mark Hamill shared his panicked experience during the evacuation from Malibu.
Entertainment Industry Disrupted
The wildfires have also forced the postponement of many major Hollywood events. The Academy Awards nominations announcement, originally scheduled for January 12, has been pushed to January 19. The American Film Institute Awards and Critics Choice Awards have also been rescheduled.
Television production has been halted, including shows like Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Ted, and Hacks. Additionally, FilmLA has canceled filming permits in affected areas such as Altadena and La Crescenta, which are popular filming locations.
For now, there is no certainty when productions will resume. Beyond logistical challenges, the industry must also consider the sensitivity of returning to normalcy while Los Angeles struggles with the massive wildfires.- BOOM!
