The reign of Squid Game 2 has finally come to an end as Netflix’s new series, XO, Kitty 2, surged to the #1 global spot, according to OTT analytics site FlixPatrol on January 20.
Released on January 16, XO, Kitty 2 scored 815 points and claimed the top position in 70 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Argentina.
This marks the end of Squid Game 2’s record-breaking streak at the top since late December 2024. During that period, Squid Game 2 made history by securing first place in all 93 countries monitored by FlixPatrol within just five days of its release. The series also amassed 1.525 billion hours of viewing time, making it one of Netflix’s third most-watched productions of all time.
However, the arrival of XO, Kitty 2 quickly stole the spotlight. The series, a spin-off of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, follows Kitty, an American teenager exploring love and friendships in her high school life in Seoul. The show’s popularity skyrocketed, reaching the top of Netflix’s charts just a day after its release.
The success of the series is further fueled by its existing fanbase, the beautiful Seoul backdrop, and its lighthearted and entertaining storytelling style.
Unlike the tense, dark themes of revenge and brutality in Squid Game 2, XO, Kitty 2 offers a relaxed take on teenage love and friendships. This contrast once again proves the strength of Korean content, which continues to captivate audiences across multiple genres. – BOOM!
