Duyung: Lagenda Aurora Praised As A Bold Experiment by An Academic Director

Duyung: Lagenda Aurora continues to register success as its box-office collection has nearly reached RM1 million since it began screening in cinemas nationwide on December 25. Directed by Datuk Prof. Ts. Dr. Razak Mohaideen, the film has drawn attention for its bold approach in exploring new boundaries of local visual storytelling.

Film critic Zaini Arjuna Hassan described the film as having a strong and significant soul. He added that the film is not merely entertainment, but also highlights social issues, environmental concerns, and innovations in AI-driven visuals.

“Honestly, the spirit of this film is big. It’s not just a legend or fantasy, but it touches on issues of power, money, human greed, the environment, and most relevant today, the use of AI in visuals,” he said.

He views Duyung: Lagenda Aurora as a courageous experiment by an academic director willing to test the limits of the creative industry.

“What the camera cannot achieve, AI attempts to help visualise. This is an effort to break old walls,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Director of the Institute of Leadership and Development (ILD), Associate Professor Dr. Idaya Husna Mohd., also praised the film’s entertainment value.

“I like this film. It’s very entertaining… I laughed with satisfaction,” she said.

Some netizens, meanwhile, acknowledged that the film may not be perfect, but its willingness to experiment, nostalgic value, and comedic elements make it a work worth watching and discussing.

“I just watched Duyung: Lagenda Aurora at GSC Mid Valley. Alright, I admit the cinematography and acting could be improved. Overall, I still feel this is a good film to watch because it delivers a sense of nostalgia.
