The video game adaptation film, A Minecraft Movie, made history in American theaters by raking in an impressive $157 million in its opening week!
With that incredible haul, the film surpassed The Super Mario Bros Movie, which previously held the crown for the highest-grossing video game adaptation with $146 million.
“A Minecraft Movie isn’t just the biggest debut of 2025, but also the most successful opening in the history of video game adaptations,” reported Variety.
Directed by Jared Hess, this film boasts a stellar cast including Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Henry), Emma Myers (Natalie), and Danielle Brooks (Dawn).
It tells the story of four people who suddenly get sucked into the Minecraft world, known as the Overworld, where they must team up to survive and find a way back from that mysterious blocky realm.
The script, penned by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, and Neil Widener, clearly struck gold with its mix of action, humor, and the game’s popular elements, winning over audiences.
With this achievement, A Minecraft Movie officially claims the title of 2025’s biggest opening film and the new king of video game adaptations. – BOOM!
