Ani Mayuni said that singers do not always have the freedom to choose their own songs, describing this as a common situation in the music industry based on her past experience.
According to the seasoned performer, songs are usually selected by the record label, and as a singer, she often has little choice but to perform them.
“As singers, we are merely delivering someone else’s work. It is our responsibility to continue our careers by performing what is given to us,” she said.
Her remarks came in response to a recent controversy surrounding alleged explicit lyrics in a song by a local singer. Ani stressed that judgment of any piece of work should not be made hastily without understanding its true context.
She explained that the meaning of a song’s lyrics should come from the songwriter and composer, rather than placing the full responsibility on the singer who merely performs the piece.
“When you look closely, most dangdut lyrics are actually about love,” she told BH Online.
Ani added that Malaysian and Indonesian dangdut cannot be directly compared, as each has a distinct identity.
“Even in terms of presentation, they are different. In Malaysia, we still know the boundaries because we understand public acceptance and follow the established rules,” she said. – Boom!
